Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-769 [HMH-769]

Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-769 [HMH-769] was activated on 15 April 1958 as Helicopter Transport Squadron 769 at Naval Air Station Oakland, California. On 1 April 1961, the squadron was redesignated as Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 769 before relocating on 1 July 1961 to Naval Air Station Alameda, California. The squadron was, on 1 September 1971, redesignated as Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 769.

On 1 September 1980, the squadron was redesignated as Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 772 Det A.

In April 1990, HMH-772 Det A (now HMH-769) became the first Marine unit to fly the RH-53D when the Naval Reserve minesweeping squadrons began to receive the MH-53E. With the minesweeping gear removed, the RH's proved to be a powerful replacement to the aging CH-53As. Later that same year, on 27 November 1990, HMH-769 was activated for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Marine Ground and Air Combat Operations during the liberation of Kuwait. HMH-769 operated from Al Jubayl and the expeditionary combat base of "Lonesome Dove" while in Saudi Arabia. During the return from the Persian Gulf, while aboard the USS Tarawa, HMH-769 RHs were involved in operation "Sea Angel". This involved humanitarian relief operations in Bangladesh after a devastating hurricane that killed over 100,000 people.

On 1 April 1993, the squadron was once again redesignated as Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 769.

On 1 May 1996, HMH-769 relocated to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California and again on 20 May 1999 to Edwards AFB, California.

On the 23rd of August, 1996, HMH-769 received the first two of nine CH-53Es to replace the RH-53Ds.

HMH-769's mission is to organize, train and equip individual Marines of HMH-769 to combat ready standards for rapid mobilization, then integration as part of the total force. The squadron also aims to provide support to the Selective Marine Corps Reserve personnel in areas of combat aviation and support. The unit participates in Fleet Marine Force Support and Anti-drug operations.
