‘Desperate Housewives’ Season 8 Premiere: The Ladies Keep a Killer Secret

Desperate Housewives returned Sunday with its final season and picked up just moments after Season 7’s finale. The women deal with the consequences of covering up Gaby’s (Eva Longoria’s) stepfather’s death and the fallout isn’t pretty.

It was a strong return, because it relied on the series’ strength, which is the bond these women have with each other. That doesn’t mean that any of them are dealing with the cover up very well, but some way worse than others.
Among the women, Susan (Teri Hatcher) is most affected by the guilt. She has become withdrawn from the other ladies and Mike (James Denton) has begun to worry if her depression has something to do with him.
Meanwhile, Gaby is dealing with Carlos’ (Ricardo Chavira) guilt over killing her stepfather – even if it was to protect her. She tries her best to find him some peace by tracking down his priest for confession. And even after kidnapping him to bring him to her home, Carlos found he couldn’t help either. The priest explains that God can’t forgive someone who isn’t willing to say what the sin is.

Up the street, Bree (Marcia Cross), who took the lead in covering up the body, is having a better time of dealing with her guilt. She’s having lots of sex with her cop boyfriend, Chuck (Jonathan Cake). That doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel anxious about the cover up, but at least she would be the first to know if the cops begin an investigation. And what better way to keep her guy close, then to keep him in bed?
For Lynette (Felicity Huffman), the death only really comes to the surface while she’s sleeping. She has another pressing problem to deal with during her waking hours. She and Tom (Doug Savant) have been covering up their separation from the kids. Every morning, he runs in from a room over the garage into the main house before the kids wake. But, there are some close encounters. The gig is up after Lynette goes to him after she’s had a nightmare about the murder and they have sex. The next morning Tom is ready to talk about getting back together, but Lynette tells him the reason why she ran to him and it wasn’t because she wanted to get back together. He then makes the unilateral decision to tell the kids they’re separating that morning.
Also, a new neighbor moves in, Ben (guest star V’s Charles Mesure). He’s rich, dashing, and British, which catches Renee’s (Vanessa Williams) eye. Problem is he’s not very interested in her. We’ve been trained over the years to look at each season’s newcomer as a possible interloper. So, why has this new neighbor moved on to The Lane?
The episode ends at Gaby’s annual barbeque. Susan has come out of hiding to inform the girls that she’s going to tell Mike about the cover up. She thinks that will alleviate some of her anxiety and take away his suspicions that something’s wrong in their marriage. The women are split over the decision and end up in a comedic physical altercation that lands them all in Gaby’s pool. Afterward, they all agree that keeping the secret from Mike and Tom keeps the men safe in case they’re caught.
But, secrets don’t stay that way long on Wisteria Lane. In the final moments of the episode, Bree finds a letter whose anonymous author claims to know what she has done and swears to tell. Who could it be?
