Square's Japanese website has opened a shop full of wonderful(-ly expensive) character goods.

Square Japan lately seems to have become our premier source for avarice-inspiring licensed videogame goods. First, they create the Square Millennium re-release series, filled with wonderful, beautiful, thoroughly useless pack-in extras. Now, on their new PlayOnline website, they have opened up a section to sell character goods based on several of their different games: Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Chocobo Racing, Front Mission, Chrono Cross, and yes, Final Fantasy. We will of course never be able to get hold of these goods, let alone afford them, since they are confined to the lucky Japanese market, but we may look upon them with lust in our hearts nonetheless. Here's a selection of what they have to offer.

This Chrono Cross SUS watch is manufactured by Seiko and limited to an individually numbered run of 1000. Want one? It's 38,000 yen, or a bit over $350.

This little diorama features characters from Final Fantasy V, our hero and his Chocobo in repose. It'll set you back 3000 yen.

Aww, yeah. This supremely swank navy blue Hawaiian-style shirt is emblazoned with the customary flower-print patterns and Final Fantasy's classic mascot the Sabotender. If you want one, be prepared to cough up a stiff 7800 yen.

This Front Mission 3 model is one of the items for sale that you can actually snag here in the states - if memory serves, Palisades marketing is bringing them out over here. Check them out if you're into quality mecha design.

A soft, fuzzy friend to all and sundry, this plush Sabotender from Final Fantasy VIII packs enough cute for a dozen game mascots. He's pretty reasonably priced, too, at only 2000 yen.

Okay, here's the big kahuna, one of the coolest items of licensed merchandise we've ever seen attached to a videogame. Remember the hockey rink in Galbadia Garden, where you fought the Slappers in Final Fantasy VIII? Now wear one of their jerseys, proudly bearing the logo of the Galbadia Bears. Cool beyond imagining, and about as expensive: 20,000 yen.

If you want to ogle these and a great many other items of cool Square stuff, head on over to the PlayOnline shop.
