Food Plant: Astrantia spp. A.bieberstedtii, A.carniolica, Heracleum mantegazzianum (Giant Hogweed), H.sphondylium (Hogweed), Pastinaca sativa (Wild Parsnip)

Mine: May-November

Notes: Larva forms a conspicuous, whitish linear mine. Larva leaves the mine through the lower surface and falls from the leaf on pupation. Puparium shining black; posterior spiracles each with 16-26 bulbs. A widespread and common species. Please note that Phytomyza pastinacae form identical mines on Heracleum and Pastinaca and the two species can only be distinguished by rearing and then dissection of the male genitalia.
