Memorable Manitobans: Maurice Alfred Gauthier (1924-2001)

Community activist.

Born at La Broquerie on 12 October 1924, he was active with the co-operative movement in Manitoba and across Canada, working with Federated Co-operative Limited and later as Deputy Minister for the Department of Co-operative Development in the provincial government.

An active proponent of the Francophone community in Manitoba, in the latter part of his career, he was Executive Director of La Liberte. He was the first President of La Société Franco-Manitobaine, established the Association des Municipalites Bilingues du Manitoba, supervised and conducted many studies on bilingual services, published a book on the history of les Caisses Populaires du Manitoba, and participated actively in many Franco-Manitoban organisations.

He died on 12 November 2001. He is commemorated by the Prix Maurice-Gauthier presented by La Société Franco-Manitobaine.
