Mount Saint Bernard Abbey – A Cistercian monastic community in the heart of rural Leicestershire

  • ️Fri Mar 18 2022

Our Mission

Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.

Isaiah 64:8

We are a contemplative Roman Catholic monastic community of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. We affirm a life of work and prayer; of radical discipleship and fidelity to the Gospel, the Rule of Saint Benedict and the Constitutions and Statutes of the Cistercian order.

Dear Friends,

Unfortunately, with unforeseen circumstances, we have to close our guesthouse again. A recent fire audit and fire risk assessment has highlighted deficiencies in the fire safety of the guesthouse and has advised that we do not take guests until the remedial works have been carried out. So, until further notice, we will not be taking guests. We are sorry for the inconvenience that this will cause; the safety of our guests has to be paramount. God bless.

Regards,

b. Adam OCSO

23rd October 2021

Dear friends,

After being closed for nearly eighteen months, we plan to resume our monastic hospitality from Monday 1st November. We have now officially started taking bookings from our guests.

However, to comply with our Government guidelines on social distancing/Covid-19, we can only accommodate a limited number of guests and are only open from Monday to Friday. We are closed over the weekend for Disinfection.

The priorities will be given to serious individual retreatants only and our aspirants. We do not take group bookings yet until further notice.

We will require a full vaccination passport from the NHS official website and a Lateral Flow Test before coming. Without this, we will not be able to take your booking.

Retreatants are also required to wear face masks in all common areas in the guesthouse. Again, this is for your safety and our community as well.

We are not open yet for day visitors without a prior appointment. We hope to lessen these restrictions after three months. God bless.

Regards,

B. Adam OCSO

“To be a Catholic, I was once told, is to be hospitable. I love that description and hope you will find this site to be a hospitable space. It contains things that matter to me, things I’ve thought about and that make me think, things I find beautiful and challenging. I am happy to be able to share them.”

We hope you find it a blessing!

CHURCH CLOSED
Due to the government’s advice, confirmed by our bishop, our church will now remain closed until further notice and the daily confessions will be suspended. Pope Francis gave this advice on 20th March for those unable to go to confession: “But many people today would tell me, ‘Father, where can I find a priest, a confessor, because I can’t leave the house? And I want to make peace with the Lord, I want him to embrace me, I want the Father’s embrace.'”
The pope said his response would be, “Do what the Catechism (of the Catholic Church) says. It is very clear: If you cannot find a priest to confess to, speak directly with God, your father, and tell him the truth. Say, ‘Lord, I did this, this, this. Forgive me,’ and ask for pardon with all your heart.”
Make an act of contrition, the pope said, and promise God, “‘I will go to confession afterward, but forgive me now.’ And immediately you will return to a state of grace with God.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, N. 1452, says: “When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called ‘perfect’ — contrition of charity. Such contrition remits venial sins; it also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it includes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible.”
“As the catechism teaches,” Francis said, “you can draw near to God’s forgiveness without having a priest at hand. Think about it. This is the moment.”

24th March 2020
