Winner of Eternal Darkness Films Contest Steps Out From the Shadows
Ten Brave Filmmakers Step Into the Darkness, One Grand-Prize Winner Finds the Light and $20,000 Award
REDMOND, Wash.--July 15, 2002--Nintendo of America Inc. and
Hypnotic today announced Patrick Daughters' "Unloved" as winner of the
Eternal Darkness Films contest.
The competition challenged aspiring filmmakers to bring to life
themes of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(TM), a new game for
NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM). From 10 semifinalists, a panel of entertainment
industry executives selected Daughters for the $20,000 grand-prize and
a chance for his winning film to be shown at a major film festival.
The contest challenged filmmakers to create a psychological
thriller featuring "insanity" to mirror the theme of the Eternal
Darkness video game. Daughters' visionary short film painted isolation
as the basis for driving an individual insane and the judges responded
to the strong impressions created through the use of music, editing
and cinematography. Daughters' winning film and the other nine
semifinalists can be viewed at www.eternaldarknessfilms.com.
"To have such a talented collection of filmmakers create
live-action, short films using elements from our latest game is a
great compliment," explained Peter MacDougall, executive vice
president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "The inspired
and terrifying visions of these filmmakers brilliantly express what
players experience when they immerse themselves in the world of
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem."
All the semifinalist's films received tremendous exposure through
the website which also placed consumers in the role of critic allowing
them to cast their votes for the "viewer's choice." Tyler Spangler and
Michael Cioni won the $3,000 Viewer's Choice award for their film,
"Cutting Room Floor." It was rated the best film by online audiences
for capturing the spirit of the game and ranked second place among the
entertainment industry judging panel.
