In the years just after the Civil War, disappearances of oceangoing vessels are attributed to some manner of sea monster; Prof. Arronax and his assistant Conseil are asked to investigate. Their steamship is sunk, but the pair, and another man, a whaler, are rescued by a well-equipped submarine, the Nautilus. Commanding it is the misanthropic Captain Nemo. Finest adaption of any Jules Verne novel. Won Oscars for Best Set Decoration and Best Special Effects; received a nomination for Best Film Editing.
