Executive summary: First President of New York Life Insurance Company
James D. P. Ogden was the first President of Nautilus Insurance Company (now New York Life), chartered on 21 May 1841 but not actually opened for business until 12 April 1845, when $17,000 in assets had been raised. Operating out of a small office at 58 Wall Street in New York City, the company was chartered by the state of New York to issue fire, marine and inland navigation insurance, but soon began offering insurance policies on the lives of free men and slaves. The firm sold 449 life insurance policies during the three years that Ogden was President, and by good fortune no policy-holders died during that time. Ogden was orphaned at the age of 11, apprenticed for the mercantile firm of Van Horne & Clarkson, and for several years he was that company's agent in Liverpool, England. He also served as interim US Consul there under President Andrew Jackson.
