Biography

Marcel Boulenger was a French novelist and critic. As an author, he is primarily known for his pastiches, and his many faux “autobiographies” of imaginary people. He was one of the first writers to introduce sport into literature and participated in the “1906 Consultative Conference on the Arts, Literature and Sport”. He closely co-operated with Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio. Together with his brother Jacques (1879-?), author and historian, Boulenger regarded himself a typical “Dandy” in France. In 1921, he wrote Les aventures d’un dandy (Adventures of a Dandy). The title of his 1912 Olympic entry is not known; probably it was one of his works about fencing like Quarante escrimeurs (Forty Fencers) from 1903. In 1924, he was a member of the jury for literature at the Olympic art competitions. As a sportsman, he was also a participant in fencing at the 1900 Paris Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the individual foil.
