Olympedia – István Aranyos

István Aranyos started gymnastics in 1952. Between 1962 and 1968, as an athlete of Budapest Honvéd, he won 13 individual (all-around, vault, and floor exercise three times each, and on rings four times) and five team national championship titles. In 1968, he was chosen as the Gymnast of the Year in Hungary.

Between 1963 and 1968 Aranyos was a member of the Hungarian national team, appearing at the Olympics at Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico City in 1968. His best result was at Tokyo, finishing ninth with the team. He ended his active sports career in 1969.

Between 1959 and 1963 he worked as a mechanical engineer. In 1974, he obtained a coaching certificate at the Academy of Physical Education and worked first as a coach for Budapest Honvéd and then for Újpest. As a passionate collector of Olympic badges, he participated several times in the collectors meeting of the Hungarian NOC and Olympic Academy. At the age of 60 Aranyos underwent a heart transplant.
