Biography
Tatsuyoshi Ishihara was one of the sport’s top racers in the mid-1980s. In 1986, he captured the overall world title, along with wins in the 500 and 1,500 m. In 1984 and 1985, Ishihara had finished second overall, and he would claim a bronze medal in 1988. In distance events, he further claimed the 1,500 m in 1985, 1988 and 1990, as well as the 1985 3,000 m. He was also successful with the Japanese relay squad at World Championships, winning 7 medals between 1980 and 1994. In 1985, 1992 and 1994, the Japanese claimed the world title, while earning bronze in 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1986. When short-track was a demonstration event at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988, Ishihara scored a third place in the 500 m. Ishihara crowned his career with an Olympic medal in Albertville, when the Japanese skated to a third place.
