Olympedia – Athens (ATH)
By far the best known city-state of ancient Greece, Athens is still the nation’s capital today. In ancient times, it was the dominant force, or hegemon, during several periods, and the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, Pallas Athena, took her name from the city.
Based on the known Olympic champions, Athens is the third most successful Ancient Olympic city-state, trailing Elis and rival Sparta. Among its notable champions is Pantakles, the first athlete we know to have successfully defended his title, winning his second stadion title in 692 BCE, and claiming a third title in the 692 BCE diaulos.
Includes medals won as part of mixed teams.
