Olympedia – Sierra Leone (SLE)

Sierra Leone created the Sierra Leone Olympic and Overseas Games Committee (SLOOGC) on 14 January 1964. This organization was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) only a few days later, on 27 January 1964, at the IOC Session in Innsbruck. In 1992, the name was changed to the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOCSL).

In 1960, a Sierra Leone athlete, Alifu Massaquoi, represented Liberia in the Olympic marathon, finishing 62nd. But as an independent nation, Sierra Leone made its Olympic début in 1968. They have since missed only the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games, but have never competed at the Olympic Winter Games.

The NOC has never won an Olympic medal. Its best Olympic performances have come in 1984, when Israel Cole made the quarter-finals of light-middleweight boxing and in 1996 when Eunice Barber, who later represented France, finished fifth in the women’s heptathlon.
