Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, the Republican who represents southwest Washington, on Monday endorsed Florida Senator Marco Rubio in the GOP presidential race.

Herrera Beutler becomes the first Republican lawmaker in Oregon or Washington to endorse one of the presidential contenders.

"I am proud to endorse Marco Rubio as he will focus on strengthening our economy and creating jobs" Herrera Beutler said in a statement. "Marco understands that preparing the workforce for the changing economy continues to be a primary focus in the Pacific Northwest and across our country."

Herrera Beutler's endorsement may not have much impact on the presidential race in Washington state.  Democrats blocked attempts to move the presidential primary earlier in the calendar, meaning that Republicans won't decide how to allocate their delegates to the convention until a May 24 primary.

Washington Democrats will signal their presidential preference in caucuses on March 26.
