As controversy continues to swirl around his office and his fiancee, Gov. John Kitzhaber canceled plans to attend a tree-planting in Tigard this weekend.

The governor's office confirmed Kitzhaber would attend the event about three weeks ago, said Scott Fogarty, executive director of the Friends of Trees, which helped coordinate the event that coincided with the state's birthday.

Gov. John Kitzhaber cancels plans to attend a weekend event in Tigard.

A press release from the City of Tigard announced in red letters "Governor's Appearance Cancelled."

A spokeswoman for the governor's office could not be reached for comment.

Fogarty of Friends of Trees said he saw no connection to the governor's change in plans to the current controversy. He said the plans were tentative and that the governor has had to cancel on similar plans with his nonprofit in the past.

The Governor was to join citizens in sending a "green Valentine -- and birthday present -- to Oregon." The morning event also was planned by the City of Tigard and Clean Water Services.

News of the governor's change of plans comes as Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown is cutting short a trip to Washington, D.C. to return to Oregon on Wednesday.

She was scheduled to come back Friday afternoon.

Brown would take over the governorship if Kitzhaber leaves office.
