Amasya Turkey by Dick Osseman

This city is one of my great favorites. It is beautifully situated, a river flows between a high plain on one side and a series of mountains on the other, a castle guards the valley from a high rock, and along the river historic houses are mirrored in the water. The main mosque, Beyazit II, is great, its type can be seen elsewhere, but there is an atmosphere that I find spellbinding. Add a number of other good mosques, the climbing you can do, and the proximity of other great cities like Sivas and Tokat: go and see for yourself. I here add a small group of pictures from a mosque in nearby Merzifon.

A short survey of Amasya’s history and some monuments linked to it: Kingdom of Pontus (rock tombs), Roman & Byzantine Empire (the fortress), Danişmend (Hilafet Gazi Türbesi), Seljuk (Burmalı Minare), Ilhanlı (Bimarhane), Beylik of Kutluşahlar (Kadılar Türbesi), Ottoman (Beyazıt Mosque), Turkish Republic (War Monument).

Danişmend = Turkmen dynasty that ruled in north-central and eastern Anatolia in the 11th - 12th centuries.
Ilhanlı = Iran based Mongols, who defeated the Seljuks at the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1243 and annexed their territory.
Beylik = Turcoman principality. Anatolian beyliks span the period 1250-1515.

AMASYA

Amasya, benim en sevdiğim şehirler arasında yer alıyor. Yerleşimi çok güzel;; bir tarafta yüksek bir ovanın ortasından akan bir nehir, diğer taraftaysa bir dağ sırası. Yüksek bir kayanın üzerinden bir kale, vadiyi koruyor ve nehir boyunca uzanan tarihi evlerin görüntüsü suda yansıyor. Merkez cami olan, II. Beyazıt Camisi muazzam. Camide kullanılan tarza başka yerlerde de raslanabilir, ama atmosferi muhteşem. Bütün bunlara diğer güzel camileri, yapabileceğiniz tırmanışları ve bir de Sivas ve Tokat gibi büyük şehirlere olan yakınlığını ekleyin. Gidin ve kendiniz görün.
