PAPUA NEW GUINEA ULTRAS LIST
ULTRA-PROMINENCE PAGE
31 Mountains with Prominence of 1,500 m. or greater
released 8/24/04
This list contains all known P1500 summits in the nation of Papua New Guinea, including 17 on the main island, 5 on New Britain, 2 on Fergusson Island, and 7 that are the highest points on other islands.
This list does not include the 12 summits on Irian Jaya, which is the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. Those peaks can be found on the Indonesia page. The island of New Guinea may well end up with four of the world's Top 100 prominences; given that Mt. Suckling and Mt. Wilhelm place near #100.
February 18, 2006: I have changed the style of this page to
reflect the "interpolated prominence", which is the same as what will
be found on the other ultra pages. All of the saddle data on this
page was taken from the Papua New Guinea 1:100,000 map series, which
has a 40 meter contour interval. I have taken the midpoint of the
contour intervals for the saddle elevation in the instances where a
spot elevation is not provided. This was compatible with SRTM
data in every case.

FOOTNOTES:
Source: All elevation values were taken from the Papua New Guinea 1:100,000 topographic national survey. In cases where summit values were not stated, I took the spot elevation from the Tactical Pilotage Charts, which was within the contour error bound in all but two cases.
1) HP Finisterre Range: This is the most prominent point in the country, but not the highest point. According to the topographic maps, it is an unnamed point at 4175m. This is somewhat incompatible with the SRTM data, whose highest cell in the region is only 4120m. According to SRTM, Mt. Sarawaget (#23 on this list with elevation 4121m) is approximately the same height. The key saddle, dubbewd the Ramu/Markham divide is approimately 441m, 480-40 on the 1:100,000 topographic map.
3) Mt. Wilhelm: The HP of PNG. There may be a lower saddle in Irian Jaya connecting Wilhelm to Carstenz, but this is doubtful.
9) Mt Ulawun is very active and may have a new elevation value, which is important given that it is only the HP of New Britain by 18 meters. SRTM suggests it is at least 2350m.
25) The unnamed HP of the Bewani Mtns. (a low range North of the Sepik. The PNG 1:100,000 map shows a high contour of 1960 meters with a 40 contour interval. This is consistent with the SRTM data. The key saddle, in Irian Jaya, was determined by SRTM analysis.
30) Mt. Taraka: The PNG 1:100,000 topographic map gives a high contour of 2,200+40 for Taraka with no spot elevation. This is confirmed by the TPC that gives a 2,219 elevation, leaving the peak one meter shy of the prominence criterion for inclusion on this list. However commercial maps mostly state 2,251, and this is confirmed by SRTM analysis whose highest cell is 2,250m. This suggests that the commercial maps are accurate (i.e. based on a later survey) and that the PNG100 map and TPC are inaccurate.
