Critics Consensus

A rousing and energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical, Chicago succeeds on the level of pure spectacle, but provides a surprising level of depth and humor as well.

Namrata Joshi Outlook Chicago's so engrossing that you even forget to reach out for the Coke n' popcorn. Now isn't that entertainment! Rated: 3/4 Jan 3, 2019 Full Review Barbara Ellen Times (UK) In effect it is filmed theatre, but this brings its own compensations: the more fake Chicago looks, the more real it seems to get. Jan 3, 2018 Full Review James Christopher Times (UK) What makes this more than a film of a great stage show is the way that the action spills seamlessly from the stage sets into real life. Magic. Feb 25, 2015 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand A couple of songs were left behind and I find the rat-a-tat editing distracting from the performances and musical numbers.... [T]he mercenary spirit and the splashy musical numbers, however, give the entire cast their moment in the spotlight Apr 6, 2024 Full Review Savina Petkova A Good Movie To Watch Marshall revitalises the genre by imbuing its past with new life, respectful and panegyric at the same time. Sergio A Cinema is not theater, and while some films successfully navigate this transition, this is not one of them. Though the performances and production design are competent, the film ultimately falls short, failing to justify the praise it has received. One of the most overrated films of its time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Jeff S It's all showbiz kid! This movie makes me so happy and is the definition of a really good screen adaptation of a broadway show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review D. Hunter P There were a couple of memorable songs and I appreciated the dark humor of this story. Richard Gere to me really stole the show, but even as someone that is not a huge fan of musicals, it was an entertaining ride. I thought the themes of being in the limelight and what you have to do to stay in it and how fleeting it is was well displayed. The symboolism with the colored handkerchiefs was very well done. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review D. P It’s definitely a play and a musical and very good in that regard. Catherine Zeta-Jones has always fascinated me and so has Renée Zellweger, for opposite reasons. I find her vision blurry but she is very talented. I never saw this movie until more than two decades later, now on TV on PBS without commercial interruptions 11.15.24. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Nick R Good music and choreography make this a good watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Lucas W That's it? Is this the criminal's ending?
