Coherence (2013) | Rotten Tomatoes

A case study in less-is-more filmmaking, Coherence serves as a compelling low-budget calling card for debuting writer-director James Ward Byrkit.
Brad S. R An intriguing premise, but marred by characters who are thoroughly unlikable from the start. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Kyle C It’s incredibly impressive what a tight, gripping thriller Coherence is on such a micro budget! It’s also a rare mindbender that actually makes complete and total sense by the end. Not that there’s anything wrong with ambiguity; it’s certainly the right choice for a ton of movies. But in this case, the clarity is highly effective in giving an appropriate hindsight understanding. A couple instances of poor acting are distracting occasionally, but on the whole, the story is told in such an intriguing way that they don’t hinder much. Without giving away too much, Coherence asks a lot of deep questions about what it means to be you and what we would sacrifice for a second chance at happiness. I would highly recommend this budget thriller. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Joe G Just watched for the first time with family... However, the family swears up and down that we already watched it together a few nights ago... When logging into rotten tomatoes I also found that I apparently already left a review to this film... Weird... Don't remember. Anyways, I guess its worth watching over and over again... Absolutely brilliant in every way. Great plot, character development, acting etc. Indie classic for sure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Wellington C I could swear this movie was filmed with an iPhone 4 and the visuals are not pleasant. Dark, yellowish images, with an annoying shaking, in addition to the uncertain focus and blown out light when you can see something. Most likely the budget was a slice of pizza and a coke, so I won't harp on that too much. Having said that, we have a very interesting story here, which makes you think and want to understand the developments. The performances are fair and make the story move forward in a convincing way. Regarding the plot, the individual conflicts of the characters and what was presented in their contexts added layers (and tension) to the story in the right measure, without distracting from the central focus. For those who like theories, you won't be able to validate any of them because there are only a few answers. It's a film with a supernatural proposal focused only on cause and consequence, without addressing the whys of anything. It didn't detract from the experience, but it would have gained extra points if it had explained more. With less than 90 minutes, the film could have given more answers. I liked it for the most part, with the exception of the horrendous photography. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Sérgio N Fiction and psychological suspense is a very interesting mix and Coherence (which, let's face it, we could discuss whether or not it has all that coherence) managed to create at least a very intriguing atmosphere. The alternative realities and the nature of the characters' existence, with that whole minimalist approach, in fact, created an atmosphere of great suspense. Although the ending wasn't exactly what we could have hoped for, I believe that overall it was a good experience. The production was carried out on a very modest budget, which ended up further emphasizing the strength of the script and the cast's performances. James Byrkit doesn't have much in his career, but I believe he did very well here and from the information obtained, the sequel is in the works, scheduled for 2026. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Shioka O I really enjoyed until the very end... I'm not convinced with the ending... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
