SFE: Utopia Science Fiction Magazine
Entry updated 13 January 2025. Tagged: Publication.
US Prozine, specializing in Utopian sf, published by editor Tristan Evarts. Quarterly, August 2019-current. Its arrival foreshadowed the launch of several publications in the 2020s which expressed similar tiredness with the oversaturation of Dystopias in the genre. Issues focus on stories that incorporate actual science as a means of working towards a better future but make room for explorations of Feminism or Race in bleaker settings. Many works may be considered Solarpunk.
Utopia Science Fiction Magazine is known for its variety, publishing engaging sf, Fantasy and genre Poetry, as well as essays, interviews and art; there are also associated podcasts. Featured writers with entries in this encyclopedia include Beth Cato, Robert Frazier, and Jean-Paul L Garnier. P Djèlí Clark, John Clute, Samuel R Delany, James Gurney, Joe Haldeman, Jeff Noon, and Steven Youll are among the interviewees. In addition to art selected through contests, Utopia SF has published images of scientific interest including those of experiments conducted by Dr Oliver Steinbock.
Though the magazine is generally published digitally, three print editions have been released. 5th Anniversary Anthology (anth 2023) featured reprints of notable stories and poems from previous issues with cover art by Donato Giancola. Special Art Issue (anth 2023) featured themed stories and poems as well as numerous original artworks, including the cover art by Don Davis. A second print special art issue was released in 2024, featuring cover and interior art by Chris Moore in addition to an interview. Fifty percent of proceeds from both issues have been used to support charitable causes. [JM]
