Bachelor of science in applied biology from Georgia Institute of Technology, 1975; Bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Auburn University, 1977; master of science and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, 1983 and 1985, respectively; unsuccessful application for NASA astronaut group 10; hobbies: Flying, ice skating, snow skiing, water sports, needlework; until 1998 married to astronaut Mark Lee; since July 1999 Deputy Director, Flight Projects Directorate, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama; later Director; was Director, Safety and Mission Assurance, Marshall Space Flight Center; since October 2005 employed by Jacobs Sverdrup Engineering, Science, and Technical Services.
