Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

DVD Sales - Hannah Dominates DVD Sales

There were eight new releases to reach the top 30 on the sales chart this week, and one of them dominated the chart. It was a hard slog to get through the spotlight reviews this week. I live in Abbotsford, and this was the weekend of the Abbotsford Air Show and the constant stream of jets flying overhead made it nearly impossible to watch movies at times. (Do you know how loud you have to be to drown out Cutthroat Island?) As for this week's list of home market releases, there are a number that are worth picking up, but none that are must haves, and none rise to the level of DVD Pick of the Week. International Details - Terminator's Salvation Yet to Come

Terminator Salvation opened worldwide this weekend, but we won't have those numbers till Wednesday. In the meantime, it earned third place with $13.37 million on 1283 screens in 12 markets for a total of $25.52 million. Most of this has come from South Korea, where it slipped to second place with $4.21 million on 713 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.52 million after two. So far the film has been a disappointment domestically, but it can salvage its run with a massive box office next weekend on the international stage. Star Trek slipped to third place on the international chart with $11.34 million on 5069 screens in 56 markets for a total of $87.68 million. It has now made more internationally than the previous film made worldwide. The film's best market was the U.K. where it has made $24.37 million, including $2.60 million on 474 screens this past weekend. As for future releases, it opens in Japan this weekend, while it has yet to open in Mexico, India, and other markets. More...

International Details - Trek Reaches Milestone

Star Trek's second weekend of release on the international chart was not as strong as it was domestically as it dropped 44% to 20.02 million on 5782 screens in 55 markets, but it lifted its total of $67.89 million internationally and it became the first in the franchise to reach $200 million worldwide. The film opened in China, but box office numbers were not released. We do have details on most holdovers, including the U.K., where it added $5.27 million on 498 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.42 million after two. The only other multi-million market was Australia, where it earned $2.04 million on 317 screens giving it a total of $6.66 million. More...

International Details - Wolverine is Cut Down, but Still Fighting Hard

Wolverine was pushed into second place on the international chart with $28.95 million on 8982 screens in 93 markets for a total of $121.58 million. This was a 60% drop-off, but that was better than it was domestically, and it appears $300 million worldwide is a sure bet. The film was pushed into third place in the U.K., but still managed a healthy $3.39 million on 484 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.47 million. It remained in first place in France with $3.95 million on 700 screens, but that was for the full week giving the film $11.80 million after two. It also finished in first place in Brazil with $2.11 million on 609 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.81 million after two. Star Trek Soars Higher

It was a good news / bad news type of weekend, but I think it is safe to say the good news outshone the bad news. Yes, the overall box office was down 5.5% from last weekend to $149 million, but that was just shy of 20% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has now amassed an impressive $3.44 billion compared to just $2.96 billion this time last year. That's an increase of 16% over last year, which is an unbelievable pace, one that I assume 2009 will not be able to keep up. However, each dollar earned now is one less dollar needed to be earned at the end of the year to keep pace with inflation. More...

International Details - Hannah Strikes a Chord

We've entered the summer schedule and this year there will be a small change. Instead of dealing with just the films that have reached $1 million or more on the international chart, we will be dealing with just the films that have reached $2 million or more. The reason for this change is simple; with the rise of many midlevel markets, reaching $1 million is just not that big of a feat anymore. The best of the rest of this week's selection was Hannah Montana the Movie, which placed a healthy second with $6.95 million on 1300 screens in 13 markets for a very early total of $8.96 million. International Top Five - Furious Still Running Fast

Fast and Furious took another victory lap on top of the international box office with $15.91 million on 6333 screens in 58 markets for a total of $170.94 million. This includes a first place finish in Italy; there the film topped the charts with ease, despite falling nearly 60% to $2.10 million on 422 screens over the weekend, while it has made $8.81 million after two. It fell even further in Australia down 62%, but it still managed to repeat on top with $2.17 million on 345 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.68 million. The final weekend of April is usually slow, but that was not the case this year, as nearly every film in the top five beat expectations, sometimes by large margins. It's the final weekend before the start of the summer blockbuster season, which means there are not a lot of prime films coming out. Studios don't want to risk A-list films when they only have one week to grab as much box office as possible before they are crushed by the competition. As spring draws to a close, and studios sweep out the potential misfires, the overall box office numbers slip in anticipation of Wolverine. Actually, the overall box office was better than expected at $108 million over the weekend, but that was still 18.8% lower than last weekend. More importantly, thanks to 17 Again's stronger than expected start, it was 15.8% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $2.91 billion, which is 17.2% higher than last year's pace. I'm not sure it will be able to maintain this pace over the summer. In fact, I'm nearly 100% sure it won't. That said, the year has built up a sizable lead, and as long as the summer is merely average, we should go into the fall with higher ticket sales. More...

International Details - Unknown Success

Knowing was able to sneak into third place, despite earlier reports to the contrary. Over the past weekend it earned $13.35 million on 2943 screens in 24 markets for a total of $47.80 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, but most of the growth came from two major markets: Germany and Spain. In the former it made $1.47 million on 440 screens, while in the latter it made a more impressive $2.35 million on 330 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.11 million. As far as holdovers are concerned, the film held steady in France down just 16% to $3.06 million on 348 screens, but that was for the full week.
