DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 18th, 2011
January 17th, 2011
It's a very slow week on the home market with Takers being the biggest first-run release. Admittedly, it did perform better than expected at the box office, but was still only a midlevel hit. The best bet in terms of new releases is Buried, which is coming out on a Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, but without a DVD only option. However, while that movie is amazing, there are not enough extras to be considered pick of the week material. For that honor we have to go to Futurama: Volume Five, even though it didn't come out this week, or even this year. However, the screener arrived really late, and it is the best release on this week's list.

Doing Time on the Per Theater Chart
August 10th, 2010
Leading the way on the per theater chart this weekend was Cairo Time with a healthy average of $13,249 in five theaters. The only other film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart was Avatar. Yes, that Avatar. It played in just one theater over the weekend and earned $10,511.

The Disappearance of Limited Releases
August 6th, 2010
There are a lot of films on this week's column, but ironically, it feels like there are not that many true limited releases. Of the eight films below, more than half are opening in a dozen or more theaters. Two of them are opening in more than 200 theaters, which is generally far too many for a limited release. Even more troubling, only half are earning overall positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which could be devastating at the box office.
