Synopsis
What will it sound like when you die? A chain of people receive terrifying cell phone messages of their own final, fatal moments. Though the messages can be deleted, their number is up. Beth Raymond is traumatized when she witnesses the gruesome deaths of two friends just days apart. Even more disturbing, she knows that both of them had received chilling cell phone messages; —actual recordings of their own horrifying last moments. Impossibly, the calls were received days before they died, but each death occurred precisely when and how the messages foretold. The police think Beth is delusional—except for Detective Jack Andrews, whose own sister was killed in a freak accident that bears a strange similarity to the deaths of Beth’s friends. Together, Jack and Beth work feverishly to unravel the mystery behind the ominous calls. But even as they get closer to the truth, Beth’s cell phone begins to ring with an eerie tune, and the readout says One Missed Call….

DVD Releases for April 22, 2008
April 21st, 2008
It's a slow week by nearly every measure: big releases, overall quality, overall quantity, spotlight reviews, etc. This is great news for me since recently a package arrived with several DVDs, all of which were late. I'm not quite completely caught up, but I am very close. As for this week's releases, there were only a handful of releases that were even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. Both The Savages - DVD and The Orphanage - DVD or Blu-ray earned excellent reviews, but their home market releases were only average. Cloverfield - DVD wasn't as good a movie, but the DVD had the best combination of movie quality and special features. The specter of a Blu-ray release notwithstanding, it is the DVD Pick of the Week.

Bucket Full of Cash
January 15th, 2008
It's the second weekend of January and we still haven't seen a January release top the charts.
This time the biggest hit was a wide expansion from December, which not only finished first, but also helped the overall box office reach $130 million.
This is about 7% lower than last weekend, but roughly 1% more than the same weekend last year, and this weekend last year was Martin Luther King Weekend, which helped boost the numbers.

With only one new release this weekend, and a sub-par one at that, holdovers will dominate the box office this weekend, just like they dominated the box office last weekend.
The same group of holdovers might dominate the box office next weekend as well.

2008 Preview: January
January 1st, 2008
It's the beginning of a new month, and a new year. This new beginning brings with it a sense of hope and exhilaration for many people, but this does not extend into the movie world. January is dominated by films from last year. Not only are holdovers going to overwhelm new releases at the box office for the next couple weeks, but with the award season heating up, most buzz is about who will win what. In fact, only Cloverfield seems to be able to rise above the award season buzz, but this is not a sure sign that the film will survive at the box office.
