The government will set up an 'industrial estate' to facilitate relocation of chemical factories outside the Dhaka city, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said yesterday.

“We are in the process of acquiring lands for this purpose,” Amu said at the closing ceremony of a three-day 'development fair' organised by the Dhaka district administration at Shilpakala Academy.

The government organised the show to make people aware of its development activities. The chemical industrial park will be established on 50 acres in Munshiganj, Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, senior secretary of the industries ministry, told The Daily Star by phone.

Amu, in a statement, said chemical factories that are operating in a scattered manner in the capital will be relocated to the park.

The government is also developing separate industrial areas for light engineering firms that are based in Dholaikhal in old Dhaka. Similarly, separate industrial estates are being established for printing, plastic and automobiles industries.

“Bangladesh aims to attain sustainable development through planned industrialisation,” Amu said, citing various policies the government has framed, including industrial policy and industrial plot allocation policy.
