Guineas winner Lahan out for season. - Free Online Library

Sagitta 1,000 Guineas winner Lahan was yesterday ruled out of action for the rest of the season through injury.

The John Gosden-trained filly has not raced since her triumph at Newmarket in May, having sustained a leg injury which prevented her taking part in a showdown with dual Classic heroine Crimplene in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

At first the injury was not thought to be too severe, but it turned out that she had a stress fracture to her off-fore and needed at least three weeks of box rest.

Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, said yesterday: "Lahan started walking again this week, but she certainly will not be racing again this season.

"I have no idea whether she will stay in training next year or be retired, because I haven't discussed the matter with her owner."

Lahan has suffered just one defeat in four outings, when fourth behind Iftiraas on her reappearance in the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes on unsuitably testing ground at Newbury in April. She bounced back from that defeat to win the 1,000 Guineas by a length and a quarter from Princess Ellen.

Injury also blighted the career of last year's 1,000 Guineas winner Wince, who ran only once after her Newmarket success, when a disappointing fifth in the Irish equivalent. King's Best, this season's Sagitta 2,000 Guineas hero, was also hit by injury, being retired after breaking down in the Irish Derby.
