Top dogs help hospital bid. - Free Online Library

CANINE TV stars were today gathering at the site of a partly-built animal hospital in an attempt to help raise the pounds 1 million needed to complete the centre.

Among the four-legged celebrities due to attend the appeal launch for the pounds 4.4 million Victoria Animal Hospital in central London were EastEnders favourite Wellard, Pippin the tail-wagging star of Woof, and Arthur the ubiquitous cat food mascot.

The appeal, which is being led by animal welfare charity The Blue Cross, also has the backing of two-legged stars Valerie Singleton and magician Uri Geller.

A spokeswoman for The Blue Cross disclosed that singer Elton John is keen to sign a brick to be used in the new building, the original of which opened its doors for the first time in 1906.

Among improvements included in the new hospital are a lift to carry heavy dogs upstairs after operations - and soothing music that will be played to patients to help them sleep in the busy wards.
