Welcome to Wellington Park

A treasured 18,011 ha reserve on the doorstep of Nipaluna, Lutruwita / Hobart, Tasmania, and the traditional lands of the Muwinina. The Park stretches westward from the 1271m summit of  Kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Spectacular lookouts, dramatic cliff faces, boulder fields, waterfalls, fern glades and amazing dolerite rock formations await.  

Wellington Park is open every day. Entry is free.

  • Drones of any size are not permitted in Wellington Park without a permit
  • No overnight parking in campervans or motorhomes
  • Dogs are permitted on approved tracks only and must remain on-lead at all times
  • Wellington Park is closed to all users on days of Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger
  • Camping in Wellington Park is not permitted other than rough bush camping in the Natural Zone. There is no camping infrastructure in the Park.
  • Camp fires are prohibited unless in designated fireplaces (inside selected huts) outside of the Fire Permit Period. Firewood must not be collected in Wellington Park.
  • Trail bikes, quad bikes and ATVs are prohibited within Wellington Park. Please report illegal use.

From dry woodlands to windswept summits, Wellington Park is threaded with recreational trails. Shorter walks in the eastern foothills are well suited to families and dogs (on lead) are welcome on many of the trails. Placenames Tasmania have officially revised the palawa kani name for the mountain under advice from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre. The mountain is now officially cited as 'Kunanyi / Mount Wellington'.

The Trust is pleased to advise that the East West Trail is now open to recreational 4WD permit-holders. Permits are available online and gate keys can be collected from Glenorchy City Council on presentation of your permit.
