The Peak of Serenity was a hidden monastery and sanctuary located high in the north-central reaches of Pandaria's Kun-Lai Summit. It served primarily as a training ground and place of refuge for monks, and was easily accessible to them through [Zen Pilgrimage]. In this way, it served a very similar function for monks as Moonglade did for druids and Acherus: The Ebon Hold did for death knights. Currently, the location is still accessible to characters below level 100 for game-play purposes but gets destroyed by the Legion during the third invasion of Azeroth.

History[]

Founding[]

A reportedly true story tells of how the last emperor of the mogu empire once climbed with a pandaren servant to the Peak of Serenity and surveyed Pandaria. He told his servant that he wished to do something to make everyone in Pandaria smile, to which the pandaren replied "You'll jump, then?". The story does not tell what became of the servant, but it is said that the emperor thereafter announced that he considered that part of the mountain to be tainted, and no mogu would visit the place again.^[1]

Shortly after Kang began teaching his fellow pandaren slaves the ways of the monk, he and his followers relocated to Kun-Lai Summit and secretly built a monastery among the wind-lashed peaks to continue their training,^[2] and it was at the Peak of Serenity where the first monks trained in secret and planned the overthrow of the mogu.^[3]

Legion[]

This section concerns content related to Legion.

At the time of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the monastery was destroyed by an army of demons led by Lady Keletress,^[4] an eredar who has made her personal mission to wipe out the monks of Azeroth, seeing their quest for balance and order as an affront to the Burning Legion.^[5] The surviving monks moved to their new order hall, Shen-zin Su, also known as the Wandering Isle.

However, several NPCs are still there. Some of them are stuck in the Legion structure, and Zidormi can make you travel back to before the Legion attack.

In World of Warcraft[]

While anyone is welcome to visit the monastery, it is only accessible through flying, or by a long and winding journey by ground mount. Portals to Stormwind and Orgrimmar can be found within the main hall atop the Peak to facilitate outbound traffic.

The Peak itself features several areas, including a large training ground, a hot spring, a small pavilion with several vendors and profession trainers, and shrines to each of the four August Celestials. Each shrine hosts a group of monks studying the discipline or style of its respective Celestial, three of which (Ox, Tiger, and Serpent) are the inspirations of a playable monk specialization (Brewmaster, Windwalker, and Mistweaver, respectively). Students of the Crane focus on academic learning over martial prowess, and as such can be found poring over ancient scrolls and texts rather than sparring.

Notably, there are vendors at the Peak of Serenity that will allow monks to purchase class-specific consumables, armor and weapons, many of which have unique and distinct models. Monks may purchase tiger and serpent brews from Master Chang, class quest reward belts from Master Cannon, class quest reward staves (as well as  [Meditation Manual: Zen Flight]) from Master Hwang, and fist weapons from Master Tan. All of these armor and weapon models are transmogrifiable.

Notes and trivia[]

• In Vol'jin: Shadows of the Horde, the Shado-Pan Monastery is implied to be located on or at least very near the Peak of Serenity,^[1][6] and both the Peak of Serenity and the Shado-Pan Monastery are described as the location where the first monks planned their overthrow of the mogu.^[1][3][6] The Chronicle of Ages describes the hidden monastery built by Kang's followers but implies that it became the Shado-Pan Monastery or the Temple of the White Tiger, rather than the Peak of Serenity.^[7]
• The Peak of Serenity initially featured in a scenario, but was cut from the game's beta phase.
• Many of the masters at the Peak of Serenity appear to be named for famous eastern martial artists and filmmakers, including John Woo, Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Feng Zhe.
