The Forest of Elwynn is the fifth mission of the Human campaign in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans.
Mission briefing[]
The Forest of Elwynn is a strategic key to securing the Borderlands. An outpost near the southeast edge of the forest will serve as your stronghold. The King has assigned one of his knights to aid you, so that your task of ridding the area of Blackhand's dark minions may be more readily completed.
Guide[]
Send one Peasant to the Gold Mine north of the base and send the other Peasant to the lumber patch south of the base. Train peasants and get started on your economy. You will want 10-12 for an efficient operation (Around 9 for gold and 3 for lumber). Once you have a clear path to the south Gold Mine, you can send Peasants to mine from there, as well. Your starting forces can handle the first 2-3 waves without too much trouble, but try to make an effort to keep them alive. Enemy waves always approach from the west, but once in a while they will show up closer to the very bottom of the map, so make sure the whole area west of your base is well-scouted.
The mission introduces a new unit: Knights. They are not cheap, require a fair bit of extra tech (A Blacksmith and Stables are required to train them, but they bring durability and heavier attack power than a Footman while still costing only one supply. The enemy base is surrounded by Raiders and a wave of Archers may not be enough to bring them down before they cut your forces to pieces, so make sure you have Knights to deal with them.
When economy permits, get a Church going. Healing is already researched, so you can skip straight to building Clerics and heal your troops to keep them alive. Two should be enough to keep your forces alive while you build them up, though you may want 3-4 when you are ready to push.
The player will have access to several new upgrades for swords, shields and faster horses. Faster horses is not an essential for this mission, but you should (at least) get the first upgrades for swords and shields when you can afford them.
The enemy behaves similar to the previous base mission: They send waves of units while gradually increasing their numbers: The longer you take, the larger the waves will become. The only real difference is they add Raiders to the mix.
When you build up a large enough force of Knights and Archer (at least 6-8 Knights, a dozen Archers and 3-4 Clerics), move to the narrow forest opening along the west side of the map, setup an Archer ambush and move a fast-moving unit forward (Knight has better survivability) to lure the large group of Spearman forward. Have your Clerics ready on the heal and recover troops when possible to minimize losses. Advance through the forest and pick out and stragglers along the way. Before heading west to the enemy base, setup another Archer ambush and keep Knights on hand in case you meet heavy resistance. Use a Knight to lure what you can to your ambush for maximize damage. Repeat this process until you finally reach the base and proceed to lay waste to the Barracks and Temple before worrying about anything else. Once they have been destroyed, finish off everything else.

Misc. Information[]
Trivia[]
- The Gold Mine to the north of the player's base is 'just' within the acquisition range of the large gathering of Spearman southeast of the enemy base. Placing a Peasant along the left side of that mine will trigger at least one Spearman to charge at the player's base. This can be used in a strategic manner to lure the enemy ambush to the player's forces a unit or two at a time until it has been cleared by cutting down the lumber around the north Gold Mine.
