Upon donation to the museum or selecting "Tell me more about this!", Blathers will say:
"The australopith, thought to be one of the links between humans and apes, emerged 4,000,000 years ago. They lived long ago, even before the ancestors of the modern humans, so there are profound differences... Even so, it seems to me that you can see the beginnings of greatness here!"
The australopithecus can be found in the third room of the fossil exhibit and shares a recent common ancestor with humans.

Australopithecus (/ˌɒstrələˈpɪθɪkəs, -loʊ-/ OS-trə-lə-PITH-i-kəs, -loh-) from Latin australis, meaning 'southern', and Greek πίθηκος (pithekos), meaning 'ape'; singular: australopith) is a genus of hominins that existed in Africa from around 4.2 to 1.9 million years ago and from which the Homo genus, including modern humans, is considered to be descended. Australopithecus is a member of the subtribe Australopithecina, which includes Paranthropus, Kenyanthropus, Ardipithecus and Praeanthropus, though the term "australopithecine" is sometimes used to refer only to members of Australopithecus.
