Experimental and clinical studies have led to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the development of anterior and posterior capsule opacification; more objective and better comparable systems of documentation and analysis of PCO; and a number of surgical and pharmaceutical strategies to prevent PCO.

The present article reviews literature related to incidence, aetio-pathogenesis, treatment and prevention, highlighting current concepts related to PCO, the most common visually disabling postsurgical complication of modern cataract surgery.
