The volcanic origin of the Samoan archipelago can be explained by one of three models, specifically, by a hot spot forming over a mantle plume, by lithospheric extension resulting from complex subduction tectonics in the region, or by a combination of these two processes, either acting sequentially or synchronously. The origin of the Canary Island Seamount Province - New ages of old seamounts

It is concluded that shallow mantle upwelling beneath the Atlantic Ocean basin off the NW African continental lithosphere flanks produced recurrent melting anomalies and seamounts from the Late Jurassic to Recent, nominating the Canary Island Seamount Province as oldest hotspot track in the Atlantic ocean, and most long-lived preserved on earth.

A subduction and mantle plume origin for Samoan volcanism

It is found that two geodynamic processes can explain mantle melting responsible for intraplate volcanism in the Samoan region, and the Subduction-Induced Mantle Upwelling (SIMU) drives decompression melting in the westward-swept plume material, thus producing the non-hotpot volcanism.
