A regional diversification model is presented that reproduces the main Phanerozoic eon trends in the global diversity of marine invertebrates after imposing mass extinctions and finds that the dynamics of global diversity are best described by a diversificationmodel that operates widely within the exponential growth regime of a logistic function.

It is proposed, although not assumed, that perturbation may include a degree of selectivity related to the dispersal abilities of organisms, thereby enhancing the observed asymmetry of the diversity response.
