An Arizona Medicaid Expansion Referendum did not make the November 2014 general election ballot in Arizona. If it had reached the ballot and been approved by voters, the measure, which was being sponsored by the group The United Republican Alliance of Principled Conservatives, would have repealed the expansion of Medicaid that Gov. Jan Brewer (R) was actively promoting. The referendum petition fell short of the signature requirement by about 5,000 signatures. Without a successful veto referendum, the expansion of medicaid was set to take effect. The expansion was designed to add more than 300,000 people to the state plan.[1][2]
Support
The referendum was being sponsored by the group, The United Republican Alliance of Principled Conservatives. The effort was spearheaded by former senators, Frank Antenori and Ron Gould.[1]
Opposition
The law in question was promoted and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer.[1]
Path to the ballot
In order to put the veto referendum on the 2014 ballot, supporters were required to gather 86,405 valid signatures by September 11, 2013. On the day of the deadline, supporters announced that their petitions were about 5,000 signatures short of the required threshold.[2][3]
