In 2009, a notice of intent was filed to recall California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The recall effort failed to make the ballot, and was abandoned.

Background

The governor was the subject of controversy when it came to issues such as prisons, water and the environment. According to petition organizer Edwin T. Snell, “Arnold Schwarzenegger does no longer represent the interests of the people and has betrayed the trust of the voters. Schwarzenegger initiatives on prisons, water and the environment have been a complete disaster.”

Snell gathered the 50 required signatures for his notice of intent to circulate the recall petition.[1]

A second petition began circulation when Secretary of State Debra Bowen approved it on May 15, 2009. The recall effort was spearheaded by John D. Fusek, who represented the group Taxpayers United to Recall Governor Schwarzenegger.

The petition wording was as follows: “The governor promised to reduce state spending and reform state government. Instead, he increased spending by over 40%, benefiting public sector unions and special interests, at the expense of taxpayers.... The governor promised to help encourage job creation by reducing costly regulation. Instead he passed more job-killing mandates that are destroying California jobs and opportunity. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger must be held accountable for worsening the lives of California taxpayers, voters and families.”

The group had until October 22, 2009, to gather more than one million signatures from registered voters for the recall to make the ballot. The effort was abandoned before reaching this goal.[2]
