Edward Cornelius Reed, Jr. was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. After taking senior status in 1992, he worked until September 2012. Judge Edward Reed died in June of 2013, at the age of 88.[1][2]
Early life and education
Reed was born in Nevada and graduated from the University of Nevada with his bachelor's degree in 1949. From 1943 to 1946, Reed served on active duty in the United States Army. Reed received his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1952.[1]
Professional career
Reed was a tax attorney for Arthur Andersen & Co. in Boston, Massachusetts from 1952 to 1953 before entering private practice in Nevada from 1953 to 1979. Reed served as Special Deputy State Attorney General in the Water Rights Litigation division for the State of Nevada from 1967 to 1979.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
District of Nevada
Reed was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Nevada by President Jimmy Carter on April 12, 1979 to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Reed was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 25, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on September 26, 1979. Reed served as the Chief Judge of the Court from 1986 to 1992. He then assumed senior status on July 15, 1992.[1]
