Faith Hochberg was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. She joined the court in 1999 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Hochberg retired from the court on March 6, 2015.[1]
Early life and education
A native of New Jersey, Hochberg graduated from Tufts University with her bachelor's degree in 1972 and graduated from Harvard Law School with her J.D. degree in 1975.
Professional career
After law school, Hochberg became a law clerk for Federal Appeals Judge Spottswood Robinson for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1975 to 1976. In 1976, Hochberg was named special assistant to chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission before becoming a private practice, attorney licensed in the State of New Jersey from 1977 to 1983 and again from 1987 to 1990. In 1983, Hochberg joined the US Attorney's Office as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey and served in that role until 1987. In 1990, Hochberg was appointed by Treasury Secretary Nicholas F. Brady as Senior deputy chief counsel in the Office of Thrift Supervision and served in that role until 1993 when Hochberg was appointed by Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Law Enforcement for the Department of Treasury from 1993 to 1994. In 1994, Hochberg was nominated by President Bill Clinton as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey serving as New Jersey's Chief Federal Prosecutor from 1994 to 1999.
Judicial nominations and appointments
District of New Jersey
On the unanimous recommendation of U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Frank Torricelli, Hochberg was nominated by President Bill Clinton on April 22, 1999, to a seat vacated by Joseph Rodriguez as Rodriguez assumed senior status. Hochberg was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 10, 1999, on a voice vote and received commission on November 15, 1999. She retired from the court on March 6, 2015[2]
