George John Mitchell (b. 1933) was the tenth federal judge in the United States District Court for the District of Maine. He joined the court in 1979 after an appointment from President Jimmy Carter. At the time of appointment, Mitchell served as a United States Attorney. Mitchell served on the court through May 16, 1980, when he resigned.[1]

Early life and education

Mitchell is a graduate of Bowdoin College and Georgetown Law School.[1]

Military service

Mitchell served in the United States Army as a Lieutenant from 1954-1955.[1]

Professional career

After law school, Mitchell joined the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust division, serving as a trial lawyer for two years. He then joined the office of U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie as an executive assistant until 1965. In 1965, Mitchell opted to begin private practice and practiced in Maine for 12 years, including a brief stint as Assistant county attorney for Cumberland County, Maine in 1971. In 1977 he returned to public service as a U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine before joining the District of Maine as a judge. He served only 6 months before resigning to accept appointment to the United States Senate to fill the unexpired term of Senator Muskie, from 1980-1995. In 1995, he became a special advisor to the president for 5 years, while serving as a private practice attorney in DC.

Judicial nominations and appointments

District of Maine

Mitchell was nominated to the court by President Jimmy Carter on July 31, 1979 to fill a new seat that had recently been created. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on October 4, 1979, and he was commissioned on October 5, 1979. Mitchell served on the court through May 16, 1980. He was succeeded in this position by Conrad Cyr.
