Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Georgia Department of Education reads:[1]
| “ | Its mission is to provide leadership, guidance and resources to help schools meet the educational needs of all students and prepare them for success in the global economy.[2] | ” |
Superintendent
The current Georgia State Superintendent of Schools is Richard Woods (R). Woods assumed office in 2015.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education is composed of 16 members, including the superintendent of schools and the Georgia Teacher of the Year as an ex-officio member. The other members of the board are representatives for each of the 14 congressional districts. They are appointed by the governor with the consent of the State Senate for seven-year terms. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[3]
