H. Patrick Leis III is a justice for Suffolk County Supreme Court in the 10th Judicial District of New York. He took office in 1996. He was re-elected in 2009 to a term ending in 2023. He also served as District Administrative Judge from 2003 to 2011.[1][2]
Education
Leis received his B.A. degree from Wagner College in 1968 and his J.D. degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1971.[2]
Career
Leis began his career in 1971 as a Kings County Assistant District Attorney. He served in this position until 1975, when he joined the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office as Chief of the District Court Bureau. During this time as a District Attorney, he served as a cross-designated assistant U.S. attorney on the Eastern District Strike Force and as a principal assistant district attorney and later, Deputy Bureau Chief, for the District Court & Rackets Bureaus.
Leis began his judicial career in 1986 when he was elected to the Suffolk County Family Court. In 1988, he became a judge of the Suffolk County Court and an Acting Supreme Court Justice. He was then elected a Supreme Court Justice in 1996. Since he joined the Supreme Court, he has held various leadership positions, such as: Presiding Justice for the Guardianship Part (1997-2000); Supervising Justice of the Dedicated Matrimonial Part (2001-2003); and Presiding Justice of the Integrated Domestic Violence Court (2002-2003). Since 2005, he has served as the Presiding Justice of the Model Guardianship Part and, since 2008, he has been the District Administrative Judge of Suffolk County.[2]
