Howell Webster Melton, Sr. was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He joined the court in 1977 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Melton was serving on senior status at the time of his death on December 18, 2015.[1][2]

Early life and education

Melton graduated from the University of Florida with his bachelor's degree in 1943 and his J.D. in 1948.[1]

Military service

Melton served three years on active duty in World War II in the U.S. Army, from 1943 to 1946, and served in the Army Reserve JAG Corps, from 1949 to 1953.[1]

Professional career

Melton began his legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Florida from 1948 to 1961. From 1959 to 1960, Melton was a part-time county attorney for St. John's County from 1959 to 1960. He joined the Florida 7th Circuit Court in 1961 and served until his appointment to the federal court.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Middle District of Florida

On the unanimous recommendation of U.S. Senators Lawton Chiles and Richard Stone, Melton was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on March 29, 1977, to a seat vacated by Judge Gerald Tjoflat. Melton was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 1977, and received commission on April 26, 1977. Melton later assumed senior status on February 1, 1991 and served in this capacity until his death on December 18, 2015.[2] Melton was succeeded in this position by Judge Harvey Schlesinger.[1]
