James Byron Moran was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Moran is served on senior status from June 30, 1995 until his death on April 21, 2009.
Early life and education
A native Chicago citizen, Moran graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with his bachelor's degree in 1952 and graduated from Harvard Law School with a juris doctoral degree.[1]
Professional career
After graduation from Michigan Moran served as a U.S. Army Sergeant from 1952to 1954 before entering law school at Harvard. Moran was a Law clerk for former federal appeals judge J. Edward Lumbard in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals from 1957-1958 after graduation from Harvard Law School. After law school and before the Federal bench, Moran was a private practice attorney in Chicago from 1958 to 1979. During that time as an attorney Moran held elective office, first as a member of the Illinois General Assembly from 1965 to 1966 and a member of the Evanston, IL City Council from 1971 to 1975.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
Northern District of Illinois
Moran was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on May 22, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Moran was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 23, 1979, and received commission on July 24, 1979. Moran served as the court's chief judge from 1990 to 1995 before assuming senior status on June 30, 1995.[1]
