James Ellison was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Ellison served on senior status from 1994 to 2014.[1] He passed away on November 22, 2014.[2]
Education
Ellison graduated from the University of Oklahoma with his bachelor's degree in 1951 and with his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1951.[1]
Military service
Ellison served in the U.S. Army as a Captain from 1951 to 1953.[1]
Professional career
Ellison was a private practice attorney in the State of Oklahoma from 1953 to 1979.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
Northern District of Oklahoma
Ellison was nominated by Jimmy Carter on September 28, 1979 to a seat vacated by Allen E. Barrow. Ellison was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on November 2, 1979. Ellison served as the chief judge of the Northern District of Oklahoma from 1992 to 1994 before later assuming senior status on November 7, 1994.[1] Ellison was succeeded in this position by Sven Holmes.
