James M. Dowd is the chief judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District. He was appointed to the court by Democratic Governor Jay Nixon on June 3, 2015, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former Judge Glenn Norton.[1] Dowd was elected to serve a one-year term as chief judge of the Eastern District from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018.[2] He was retained by voters in 2016.

Judge Dowd's current term ends on December 31, 2028.

Education

Dowd received his undergraduate degree from Saint Louis University in 1985 and his J.D. from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law in 1990.[1]

Career

Dowd spent most of his career working in private practice. Immediately prior to his appointment to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Dowd was the principal attorney for The James M. Dowd Law Firm in St. Louis, Missouri. He also previously served as a law clerk for the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, from 1990 to 1992.[1]
