Noteworthy events
Boy Scouts debate
During 2014, the California judiciary debated whether to make it a violation of ethics for a judge to affiliate with the Boy Scouts of America due to their policy of excluding gays and lesbians from troop leader positions. One judge said such an ethical code would "force a liberal political correctness on judges," while others said it would violate their freedom of religion and association. Humes said about the issue:
“ | The Boy Scouts' insistence on excluding openly gay men and lesbians from leadership positions panders to discredited stereotypes, encourages dishonesty, and sadly contradicts the Scouts' history and stated goals of teaching children citizenship, respect and honesty.[6][7] | ” |
The state supreme court later voted to adopt the rule prohibiting California judges from holding membership in the Boy Scouts.[8]
