James S. Moody, Jr. is an Article III federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He joined the court in 2000 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Prior to appointment, Moody was a circuit court judge in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. On March 31, 2014, Moody assumed senior status.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Florida, Moody graduated from the University of Florida, earning both his bachelor's and J.D. degrees in 1969 and 1972.[1]
Professional career
Moody spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Florida from 1972 to 1994 before being appointed Circuit Court Judge in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida from 1995 till his appointment to the federal bench in 2000.[1]
Judicial career
Middle District of Florida
On the recommendation of Senator Bob Graham, Moody was nominated by President Bill Clinton on June 8, 2000, to a new judgeship created by 113 Stat. 1501, which was approved by Congress. Moody was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 21, 2000, on a senate vote and received commission on July 28, 2000.[1] Moody assumed senior status on March 31, 2014.[2]

On January 11, 2010, Judge Moody ruled in favor of Dish Network after finding a man responsible for pirating Dish Network's signal.[3]
The judge found that Ward distributed over 255,000 pirated downloads of software which allowed Dish Network customers to bypass security mechanisms in Dish products which limit access to content.[3]
Moody also ordered an injunction against Ward to prevent future wrongful conduct.[3]
