Janet Bond Arterton was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. She joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. She assumed senior status on July 1, 2014, and retired on October 15, 2023.[1]

Education

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Arterton graduated from Mount Holyoke College with her bachelor's degree in 1966 and from Northeastern University School of Law with her J.D. in 1977.[2]

Arterton was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Bill Clinton on January 23, 1995, to a seat vacated by Jose Cabranes. The American Bar Association rated Arterton Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Arterton's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 27, 1995, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on March 16, 1995. Arterton was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on March 24, 1995, and she received her commission the same day. Arterton elected to take senior status beginning on July 1, 2014. She was succeeded in this position by Judge Victor Allen Bolden.[2][3][4] Arterton retired on October 15, 2023.[1]
