Jerome B. Friedman is a judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He joined the court in 1997 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Friedman assumed senior status on November 30, 2010. Friedman retired from the court on August 19, 2011.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Friedman graduated from Old Dominion College with his bachelor's degree in 1965 and later from the Wake Forest University School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1969.[1]

Professional career

Friedman was a Trust Administrator for Virginia based First Union National Bank from 1969 to 1970 before entering private practice in the State of Virginia from 1970 to 1985. Friedman was a District Court Judge in the Juvenile & Domestic Relations division of Virginia Court system, from 1985 to 1991. Friedman was appointed to serve as Circuit Court Judge in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court from 1991 to 1997, serving as the Chief Judge of the Court from 1994 to 1997.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Eastern District of Virginia

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Chuck Robb, Friedman was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President Bill Clinton on June 26, 1997 to a seat vacated by Robert Doumar. Friedman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 7, 1997 on a Senate vote and received commission on November 12, 1997.[2] He assumed senior status on November 30, 2010. Friedman retired from the court on August 19, 2011.[1] Friedman was succeeded in this position by Arenda L. Wright Allen.
